Sectional View of the Churchyard

This diagram shows a sectional overview of the church and its grounds. The graveyard is split into a number of logical sections and these can be used with the Tombstone Survey to find the approximate location of a particular grave and headstone.

Back in 1981, Sylvia Sutherland and Margaret Powell carried out this Tombstone Survey as part of a nationwide WI competition. They carefully recorded all the graves at St Mary the Virgin Church, and their hard work paid off—they earned a well-deserved second place! The award was even presented by Mrs. Donald Sinden at the Royal Show Ground in Stoneleigh.

These records include every tombstone in the church and churchyard, listing the grave number, the name on the stone, and the year the person passed away.
